The SINTEF Group, one of the largest independent applied research organisations in Europe, is present in Macedonia from the end of year 2001, engaged in the execution of projects for supporting the development of the SME sector. In the spring of 2002, SINTEF has established the Foundation for Management and Industrial Research – M.I.R. (http://www.mir.org.mk) as a joint Norwegian and Macedonian foundation. Its role is to facilitate SINTEF projects in Macedonia and act as legal entity representing SINTEF in Macedonia. It is the first foundation of this kind established by SINTEF group outside of Norway. In May 2005, M.I.R. Foundation together with the Foundation Open Society Institute Macedonia (FOSIM) has established the Youth Entrepreneurial Service Foundation – YES foundation (http://www.yesincubator.org.mk), responsible for the running of the first ICT business incubator in the country – YES Incubator and fostering the development of the entrepreneurship among the innovative young people.
Over the past period SINTEF activities in Macedonia has grown in size and scope as well as in terms of the services offered to the Macedonian SMEs. Today it has three full time local employees in the M.I.R. Foundation and two in the YES Foundation as well as many external associates. The objective is to further develop M.I.R. and YES foundations according to SINTEF Group model in Norway and in time become increasingly independent in offering specialized services but continuing its cooperation with the SINTEF Group in Norway.
Core activities are in the field of assisting Macedonian industrial SMEs. The services offered today are in the scope of SINTEF projects in Macedonia and vary from technology and knowledge transfer in the field of production management, marketing, financial management, supply chain management, quality management, to supporting the transfer of innovations and entrepreneurship.
The network of cooperating partners is extensive and it embodies governmental institutions, such as Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Science and Education, Sector for European Affairs, Agency for promotion of entrepreneurship of R. Macedonia, “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University, “Ss. Kliment Ohridski” University, many NGOs, and an extensive data base of Macedonian production companies.
